# How Can You Share a Tweet on X/Twitter > Reposting, quoting, sending by DM and embedding elsewhere, and what each of them shows the original author. - Source: https://tweetsweep.com/blog/how-can-you-share-a-tweet-on-x-twitter - Published: 2024-01-14 - Updated: 2026-08-16 - Reading time: 5 min --- ## Repost and quote posts You can pass a post along in four different ways on X, and the options that exist vary in whether your followers see what you made of it, whether the original author is notified, and whether the share leaves X altogether. Select the repost icon under any tweet, video or GIF to your followers unchanged by selecting Repost. The original media plays at the same card. This will get the item in front of your customer as it is with no additional text from you. Click Quote to put your own above the original, which becomes a new post of yours that points back. If someone quotes you, the author gets notified — with reposts this is reflected in their engagement counts. Reposts show up on your profile and are part of your public history. A repost from years ago tells as much of a story about you as a post you wrote. For example, videos and GIFs quote the same way: your comment appears above the player and the clip loops or plays inline for anyone who clicks on your quote. ## Copy link and share sheet Next, in the share icon to the right of your bookmark control is Copy link which will provide you with a URL that works anywhere (in most cases even for those without an account). You paste that URL into email, Slack, or a notes app and the person getting it sees a preview card with the text image video or GIF. On the web, the copy occurs right after a tap. Use this if the person you want to reach is not on X and in case, you do not want the share to end up anyone notification. On mobile, the same icon invokes the system share sheet for sharing with messaging apps, email and more. Most builds enable Share to Instagram Stories and similar surfaces from that sheet. Select Instagram, WhatsApp, Messages or Mail and the OS gives up the link plus a thumbnail. The same routing applies to video post or responses that are GIF-like; the app arrives at its destination will decide whether to play the media inline or show a still. None of those, however, is posted back to your X profile from this sheet. ## Bookmarks and direct messages Bookmarks — Every post bookmarked is privately saved for yourself, leaving no public trail. You can open the post, click on the bookmark icon, and it goes to that Bookmarks tab of your profile menu. No one is notified, and it never shows up on your timeline or in your profile. This is perfect when you want to store a tweet or video (or GIF) away without appearing to endorse it. You can unbookmark later from same icon or Bookmarks list. The content you saved will remain until the original author deletes their post or until you choose to delete it. Send by DM → This shares with specific people without broadcasting. SelectSend in Direct Message from the share icon, select one or more conversations, and optionally enter a note above the card. Inside the thread, the recipient sees the full tweet/video/GIF. Group DMs work the same way. You will not notify the original author when you forward their post. This is something you use when this is beneficial to only a couple of people and you do not want a public endorsement on your profile. ## Post embed markup When it comes to a tweet on the web, the overflow menu has Embed post, which will hand you HTML for use in a blog or article. Then click the three-dot icon, select Embed post from the pop-up options, copy the block and paste it onto your CMS or static page. An embed can contain the text with images and a video player or GIF, along with a Follow button. It does, until the original post is taken down and it appears as a broken placeholder. Most browsers do not require readers to have an X account to view the embedded material. Since they are mobile apps, the embed snippet from them is not exposed. Open x.com in a desktop browser > locate the same post > click the overflow menu there. Embeds don't add a line in your profile and it does not send notification to the author. They are the cleanest way to quote a video or GIF within an article without requiring readers' attention completely off the page. That snippet is simple HTML which you can drop in the plain WordPress or static site. Your X activity or notifications list will not show anything about the embed. ## Profile record of shares Just like posts, reposts and quotes have a way of accumulating on your profile. Simply click the web or app version of your profile, navigate to the Posts tab and every unchanged repost and each quote will be lined up chronologically with the originals you wrote. Someone scrolling that tab has no way to know you were joking about a 2015 repost. If you are reposting videos and GIFs they play there. And this is also a public record, your public record — the thing hiring managers or journalists or your old contacts are actually reading when they look up your handle. Copy link Shares, Instagram Stories and DMs do not suit your profile. Two of the public actions — Repost and Quote — are engraved in writing, immortal enough to be screencapped by others. Motivational quotes are also posts so you created them too, therefore they appear under Posts and searchable. The original tweet stays if you delete a quote later, only your own commentary is removed. So before you get to believing that your old shares are hiding, check out the Posts tab, year by year. There is another category of public traces that you might have overlooked, and it rests in the Replies tab. ## TweetSweep share cleanup TweetSweep also treats reposts and replies as first-class, meaning a cleanup encompasses both what you retweet and what you reply to. Once you link the account, the date filters treat quotes and new reposts (that have not been changed) just like they do for original tweets. Choose a start date and an end date, preview the list and you will find video reposts and GIF quotes blended into your own content! By removing a repost you are stripping down only your share. This post by the original author remains up for others. Because quotes are considered postings, when you delete it in the same run-time, it simply disappears from your profile and from the search. If you select replies, then those you made under others' videos or GIFs go with them. Private messages appear in the preview, but bookmarks and DMs are not public record. When it gets to the end of the job, you will open X, refresh your Posts tab and you should see that the old shares dont load. The original tweets youve shared still reside on their authors pages.
