# How to Make Twitter Account Public > Switching a protected account to public publishes the whole back catalogue at once. If it is hidden, open up More, then Settings and privacy. Tap on Privacy and safety, and then Audience and tagging. The first control on that page is called Protect your posts. Uncheck it. On IOS tap on your profile image or the avatar present in left drawer, then Settings & privacy. Antivirus on Android sits inside the side menu in avatar. From there its the same path: privacy and safety, audience and tagging, then switch the Protect your posts toggle off. A protected account will only show posts to trusted followers you have accepted one at a time. This is good when you are finding your feet, and limiting once you want the work to take flight. One check box or toggle to make the account public. X confirms for you after you clear protection, so your work is not done until confirmation from the dialog. If you predict that you'll toggle the setting again, bookmark Audience and tagging. The labels survived Twitter to X rename and so older screenshots of this particular path still match the current screens. ## Confirmation dialog When you select the checkbox, toggle or switch, X prompts you for confirmation. The prompt is there because the change is not reversible in any significant way. Once something is public, it can be screenshotted, quoted and indexed. Don't tap through, read the dialog. You are releasing not only future posts, but all of the back catalog at once. If you are not ready to cancel, just leave the account protected and go back when you've cleaned the timeline. That confirmation is the final gate on this screen. Nothing is staged. No preview of recent posts when displayed to a stranger and no way to unprotect just months from logging in. The Accepting the dialog applies to ANY post that is still on your account. All these continue to flip: mentions, reply threads, originals and media. Now, a post theoretically written for over a dozen approved followers years ago is as public as one you write tonight. Think of the confirm button as a publish button to the archive and not just an adjustment to the preferences. But those initial seconds after you confirm are live, so you can delete afterwards, but not before. ## Instant visibility and follow requests Everything you have ever written is displayed all at once, not just those posts created from here on out. This also includes replies to other people's posts and quote posts, as well as threads that could only be expanded by approved followers. Your timeline can be scrolled entirely and opened up by people who never sent you a follow request. If that link is now resolved, people may land on a single post from a link saved while you were protected. There is no pre-deferred and post batches. The toggle is instant on web and on both iOS and Android apps. Automatic approval of pending follow requests upon protection shutdown. At that moment, you are not provided with a list to peruse. Anyone who put in a follow request while the account was locked is automatically made a follower, with you needing to make no additional tap on their behalf. If that queue included accounts you would have denied, they now view the timeline. If the unprotect queue is long, review any outstanding follow requests first. There is no pending state after the switch. On your public profile, follow buttons simply act like any other open account. ## Replies quotes and indexing Anyone who opens those threads can see what you have responded to others. Prior to the switch, replying from a protected account was typically only visible to those of your followers. Once everything switches, a comment you wrote on an account with tens of thousands of followers is visible to that entire audience. Your posts become quotable. A quote post is a separate public object that always references yours and sits on the timeline of the person who quoted it even if you later remove your own post. Search on X is capable of bringing up posts by keyword that are older dates back to. Once the account is public, search engine can start to index your profile and post URLs. That does not take place in the minute, but the door will be ajar. It can find a cached copies and archive services that are storing a page (which they not being able to fetch) while you were blocking it. Link previews and embeds on other sites begin to resolve for unlogged in users. Those links are now fully readable timelines, and if you use the same handle on other networks. When the switch is off, the permissions change is instant (the act of changing). ## Cleanup before the switch You wrote, protected behind a pay wall, for all of half-a-dozen people. Unlock posts only after reading them as a stranger would. The switch also brings old jokes, street addresses, employer complaints and imperfect opinions. Do that before opening the door rather than after. The quickest route is to ask X for a copy of your archive, wait for the email with download link and search through files dated from each year. Even Mark stretches you would not publish today. Delete those stretches on the live account so they can never be published, quoted or indexed. Manually scrolling through years of the live timeline by hand is a waste of an afternoon. Open the calendar, select the ranges related to a job you couldn't have backed up or a year you can no longer justify and run its deletion prior to opening Audience and tagging. That order matters. Never do outsiders get a public URL to quote — the revenue comes from that, and either you or someone else pays me; posts you take down while still protected never get it. Get through those months, then turn on the light. ## Limits of reprotection You can always re-protect the account whenever you want to. Go back to Audience and tagging, and switch Protect your posts back on. The non-followers are unable to view both fresh and old posts on your profile anymore. Followers you already have stay. Existing members will go through the same process until approved, just like before. The same is true for the production i.e live restore This is not a simple undo from the time of the account. They treat the public window like a draft they can take back instead of a publishing choice that is already made. Reprotecting won't pull back a quote after someone quotes you while you're public. It will not retrieve a copy from some search engine's cache or from an archive site. It will not take back a screenshot. Those copies remain wherever it is they landed. That means if during the open window a hiring manager or anyone else saved that URL, it might still work for them — or for a crawler. Do the cleanup first. Only switch if you see posts in the remaining that you would have intentionally released and presume anything out there for a minute has staying power.
