How to Create a Twitter Business Account for Your Brand
Setting up a business account: profile, verification, discoverability settings, and the ones worth turning off before you post anything.
Account Type and Signup
There is no specific business account type for X. Brand profile: A regular account that is created intentionally, often with an added verification membership later. Firstly, begin at the X sign up screen and use a dedicated company email instead of personal so that logins can survived staff turnover. Select some password you use only for this account, verify the email or phone code on screen two and avoid selecting skip with respect to two-factor setup in the next step! You can hold off on the handle and display name until after you create the account.
Store the email in a shared company inbox or password manager vault with multiple trusted personnel access. When the only login is in the personal mail of an employee who left, you will spend days with X’ support to recuperate the account. Go to Settings after sign up then Your account and verify email. Attach a backup email, if provided by the interface. If a personal phone number (which is leaving with a contractor) was the only recovery method do connect it.
Handle and Visual Branding
Select a handle that matches the brand exactly, or as closely as is allowed by the 15-character limit. Initially set it on the signup screen or later in Settings then Username. Use same on Instagram, LinkedIn and site footer. No additional undersores ever, unless the clean name is taken. Choose the name customers know you by for your profile, rather than a slogan, through Edit profile. Test both on the timeline of an phone first before you provide the account. Only change your username once to avoid breaking old mentions.
Upload a square logo that is legible at 48 pixels, the size of your logo next to posts. In Edit profile tap to the avatar camera, then use a PNG with at least 400 by 400 pixels where you'll center your mark on fill with solid brand-color. Crop tight. Header 1500 x 500 pixels (Letterboxing occurs so avoid text in the edges of mobile cropping background.) Make color of the header match the avatar and if you rebrand, replace both in one sitting. Do not leave the default egg. Zip the final files of the brand folder.
Bio and Pinned Post
Your 160-character bio should say who you are and what you do, not that you value something. In Bio: Go to Edit profile and write it there, ‘counting as you go’ Clearly state the product or service, and the customer. Forget the mission statements and emoji walls. Instead of writing that link in the bio text, put it next to Website in the field below, so it remains tappable. Only add a location if customers need to know a city/region.
Pin post that provides one reason for a first time visitor to follow. Write that post: a succinct offer, product page, or single proof point followed by opening the menu on the right on your post to select Pin to your profile. Be careful to replace it once the campaign is over so that the pin never shows an expired date. In the event of a thread that requires scrolling, do not pin. The pin is below the bio on every profile visit and is typically the first pen content that a new visitor reads. This will be your voice for all subsequent posts.
Privacy and Direct Messages
Go to Settings → Privacy and safety, and choose who can send you direct messages. However, it is safe to say that most brands prefer keeping messages open so customers can contact support without having a follow beforehand. Enable the quality filter so that spam and mass DMs fall out of the primary box. If at any time you switch the account to protected, check the audience for posts; a brand profile must remain public. I want to confirm that photo tagging and location tagging will be the same risk you will take with strangers. Before leaving the screen, save each toggle.
Mute words and muted accounts are both located under the same Privacy and safety menu. Do not add the brands 'legal name also common misspellings to mute lists only hide noise not customer complaints. Important: under check discoverability and contacts untick, so if you use a company and not an individual email that the employees personal address book does not pull through Review these controls after the first week of actual traffic.
Verification and Team Access
The gold checkmark for organisations is obtained through X's business subscription, which also allows you to link employee accounts to the company profile. Do not submit until the profile appears complete. Do NOT apply with a dummy bio or use the default header. A: Affiliation caps templates under the brand and mitigates spoofing. These accounts don't reveal the visual identity and bio until later, ensuring reviewers see the same profile customers will. Keep the confirmation email in company vault with login and backup codes.
Enable two-factor authentication prior to anyone getting hold of your details. Don't use SMS for your 2FA, go get an authenticator app, then backup the backup codes in the company password manager. Instead of sharing one password, go to Settings, Security and account access to give team members delegate access. Assign everyone the lowest permission level to allow posting or replying. For every user that leaves, their access must be revoked as soon as they leave the same day. Do not forward the email inbox that gets 2FA resets to your entire marketing list. Every quarter, check the delegate list.
Existing Timeline Cleanup
Please read the history before you point customers to it if you're converting something existing, like a founder's personal account or a brand handle that has changed hands multiple times. However, old jokes, dead campaigns, expired offers and complaints dealt with poorly stay out there in the ether. More importantly, scroll the media tab and the replies tab too not just the main feed. Look up the brand's old product names and for words that you would never include in an ad today.
TweetSweep helps wipe those posts by date range or keyword so an account that gets a facelift doesn't start its new life shackled with a decade of somebody else's voice. Link the account, draw the history to some years back before present brand voice, or provide old campaign names and expired promo codes as keyword. After you have claimed the list, delete it. Note: this should be done before you pin a new post or advertise traffic to the profile. Having a clean timeline is a part of the launch, not an exercise to do later.
