How to Fix Twitter Videos Not Playing

Autoplay settings, data saver, browser extensions and codec problems: how to narrow down why video will not play, on desktop, iOS and Android.

On the left, stacks of social post cards lie scattered with dark frozen video screens and a cracked magnifier resting beside them; on the right, the same cards stand in neat stacks with clear moving video screens and the intact magnifier beside them.

Data saver settings

Turn off Data saver first. Look at the X app, hit on your profile faculties> settings and privacy >often a few> accessibility, display screen and languages > facts usage. Disable Data saver. When that switch is on, video won't autoplay and won't typically start when tapped if you're over a cellular connection. On the same Data usage screen, change Video autoplay to On Wi-Fi and mobile data on (or On Wi-Fi if you just want playback at home). This is just the thing to start appropriate sentences like: "Check again a post for which you failed 1 min ago, BEFORE trying something else".

4K video lives in the same Data usage screen and determines if a clip will load at full splendour over mobile data. Some players stay frozen in a still frame and never even start if it is off, especially on slower LTE. Go into it, and when you're in turn the thing on, then exit out of the app entirely and go to an account (big one like a K-Pop group) that you know works video. If the player continues to spin, it's not the setting. Data saver, which is three menus deep and gives no notification when it blocks media, is the most frequent miss.

Media cache and updates

Next clear media storage while the Data usage screen in X app is still open. Under Media storage, Tap Clear and then confirm. This clears video segments stored in cache that could freeze the player after you change an endpoint. After that look for an update in the App Store on iPhone or Play Store on Android. In older builds video playback breaks within seconds because X rotates its media endpoints. Install pending updates (if any), kill X from the app switcher, then restart it. Replaying the same post before messing with any system-level storage settings on the phone.

If videos still do not play after the in-app clear, on iPhone, and open Settings>tap General>iPhone Storage>X>Offload App. Offload deletes login and delete the binary and cache Touch X again to reinstall from App Store. Don't tap Delete App unless you agree to sign in again. When you reinstall, make sure to open up one timeline video on Wi-Fi before testing cellular. This sequence addresses most ios situations whereby a player presents a black rectangle along with an spinning ring rather than any error text when you tap play.

Android cache steps

Next, clear the system cache for X on Android. Go to the phone Settings app > tap Apps > if short tap See all apps and open X, then Storage. Tap Clear cache only. Do not click on Clear storage or Clear data. The buttons log you out and clears downloads. Clear cache Navigate one screen back then hit Force stop, now click on X from home screen icon to reopen it correct. Test a video on Wi-Fi first. If it plays though, the leftover cache was the stall, not either your account or that original post.

If Android is still not working, try Digital Wellbeing or any battery saver that powers down this app's background data. Go to Settings > Apps > X > Mobile data & Wi-Fi and turn on Background data and Unrestricted data usage. Some OEMs, though — like the Xiaomi folks behind this X app info screen here — go a step farther and add an override in the Data saver toggle inside that same X app info screen. Turn that extra toggle off. And for one test play, turn off any VPN. Even if the rest of the timeline renders text and images without any perceptible lag, a VPN exit node can still tear through the media CDN.

Browser extensions

Disable extensions one at a time starting with any ad blockers and privacy tools within a desktop browser. That stops loading the media domains X uses for video, leaving a player that spins forever with no error code. Disable and then hard-refresh x.com with Ctrl + F5 on Windows or Command + Shift + R on a Mac after every disable. That extension is when video comes back. Turn it off for X or create an allow rule for the video hosts instead of disabling the whole blocker for all sites.

Verify using a private window with all extensions disabled Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome Ctrl + Shift + P in Firefox File then New Private Window in Safari Go to x.com and view a video post from the Home timeline. If it plays in the private window and not in the normal one, there is still an extension or left-over cookie getting in the way. Delete only x.com cookies under site settings and try again in a normal window (extensions all still off).

Browser playback permissions

Turn hardware acceleration on. Open Chrome, then click the hamburger menu > Settings > System. and turn on Use hardware acceleration when available. Relaunch the browser afterward. For Firefox, go to Settings -> General-> Performance: uncheck Use recommended performance settings and check Use hardware acceleration when available. An X player stuck on a black frame had a disabled GPU path. Next, open the site settings for x.com and set Sound to Allow. x.com must not have blocked autoplay. That control also lives in Chrome under Privacy and security, Site Settings, Additional content settings, and Sound. Relaunch after any change.

For Safari macOS, open Safari Settings — Websites — Auto-Play, find x.com and select Allow All Auto-Play. No permissions for camera & microphone for simple timeline video. Even if only the embedded player on other sites goes, that's a case of the host page blocking third-party media, and not X itself. These are your Javascript and Cache Maintenance now, in this instance run another browser once for x.com in Safari as a check. The last desktop factor that could cause this still needs to be altered on that Mac is a Safari autoplay preference or Intelligent Tracking Prevention rule if Chrome plays the same post but not Safari.

Isolated video failures

Note: When one media (such as a video or image) fails to load while others do this could also be due to the post being deleted, account suspended (a banned user), or an age-restricted media. Visit settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, Content you see, and tick sensitive media. Warning state — display media that may contain sensitive content must be on, or clips will never leave it. X.com hides a lot of your video if you are not logged in. Log in and refresh that same post. Instead, a deleted post contained the generic unavailable message and not a player working with.spinner-icon

Whereas a suspended account will also remove the media file but allow the tweet URL to still be accessed. Search the username. The profile will not be available and the video won't play on any platform. Where there is no birth date on an account, or a person's age on the page under the limit X to that clip, mass media behind a wall of access for those younger will also fall short. Update the date of birth in Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information. Save and then force close the app, open the post up again. If all videos fail at the same hour, ride out the media black-out.
