Managing Safe Search Settings on X/Twitter
The two safe search checkboxes, what each one filters out of your results, and why muted words behave differently from both.
What safe search does on X
Safe search is the filter that X puts on to the result of a search This is to hide any media itself that the platform flagged as sensitive and remove posts from all the accounts you have blocked or muted. This setting is enabled by default on each and every account. It only has control over the search results — it does not affect your timeline and does not impact your home feed. The filter is independent of the sensitive media setting in your account settings, however—one governs whether or not any flagged content appears in your timeline at all. This difference — the first step to handling either control properly, is understanding.
How to modify safe search on the web
Search on any desktop browser, running X You will see a filter icon above the results — which looks like three horizontal lines, with sliders. The search settings panel will open when you click on it. It adds two checkboxes that allow you to select Hide sensitive content and Remove accounts you have blocked or muted. The first one, called Show flagged media in search results uncheck it. If you want posts from muted or blocked accounts to no longer appear, uncheck the second point. Your changes are saved and applied to your account immediately, not the device. You can omit rerunning the search. It persists until you turn it off again.
Both options work independently. This allows you to turn off the sensitive content filter by leaving the blocked and muted account filter on, and vice versa. The panel also lists the words you muted, although to change that you'll have to get up and go open a different settings page. Once you check one of those boxes, scroll further down the search results to confirm that it worked. Existing search filters do not affect it because sensitive media is under account settings (other options to be searched if you use), If still there are no flagged content.
Changing safe search on mobile
Open the X app & Click on Search bar at bottom Step 3 — Dataverse: Enter your query and run the search Tap the settings icon above your results — this is three horizontal lines or a gear depending on what OS version you're using. You see these same two checkboxes: Hide sensitive content and Remove blocked and muted accounts. Toggle them as needed. And if you do not see the Hide sensitive content option at all, then it is due to app store restriction for your device. The toggle should be hidden in apps rated for general audiences, and that is something both Apple and Google require.
The workaround is straightforward. Use a mobile browser, such as Safari or Chrome, visit x.com and log into your account. Go search there and open the filter pane. The checkbox for sensitive content will be displayed. Amend that state, and the app will pick it up in a matter of seconds. Logout or reinstall not required. Even if you then check it, this option may still not appear on the website, meaning your account is likely still not registered as over 18. Safe search cannot be switched off by X until an authentic birth date is provided. Look for your account settings in Privacy and safety, Content you see to ensure that age is appropriately adjusted.
The interplay of safe search with other settings
Safe search has no effect on browsing results. It does not interfere with your timeline (other peoples posts) or home feed. The standalone toggle for timeline content is within Settings, Privacy and safety, Content you see, tagged Display media that may contain sensitive content. By default, that setting is also disabled. As long as safe search is turned off while the timeline setting is on, it puts you in an odd state where flagged media appears in search but nowhere else on your feed. Both definitely need to be aligned if you want your behavior consistent across the entire platform.
A: Also the third layer is so-called muted words +muted accounts. Muted words block posts that have specific words on them from your timeline and the search, regardless of safe search. It values blocked accounts totally from all views. Disabling Remove blocked and muted accounts in safe search causes posts from those accounts to return only in search results, not your timeline. Muted words stay active everywhere. Those three controls stack independently, which means you'll have to check all three if you want to see what causes a post to show up or disappear.
When to tighten safe search rather than loosen it
The vast majority of users search for this setting in order to see more, but the most common use case of tightening the filter. If you see upsetting media or posts in your search results from accounts you have muted, re-enable both checkboxes in the filter panel. Both of the boxes default to on when you create your account for the first time, so if they are off then just turn them back up. No additional steps are needed. It blocks flagged media and omits muted and blocked accounts from all of your searches thereafter.
Use muted one for a more specific 🙂 Navigate to Settings, Privacy and safety, Mute and block then Muted words. Implement adding words, terms, phrases, whole usernames. X culls both from your timeline and search results, which is much better than safe search for cleaning a feed. If the aim is to control what your own posts are showing up in search results of other users, its not a filter. If you have that topic appearing under your name, then the only way to get rid of it is to delete those posts. When safe search does nothing
Direct messages, notifications, and your own profile are not impacted by safe search. This only applies for the search results page. The Sensitive Media option is the one to look at and will prevent flagged media from appearing in your timeline. When you visit blocked accounts, that is a bug separate from safe search and it also cannot be fixed. Milliper also does sweet nothing for ads. Promoted posts can still be eligible for sensitive content even if your safe search toggle is on. Meanwhile, X does not do content moderation on paid placements.
With changing safe search once it applies to all devices you are using. You never need to repeat the process on your smartphone, tablet, or office PC. The setting is linked to your account sign in. If you are logging out or using a different account, that account has its own safe search state. If the web browser is in guest mode X's default (which has safe search) is always applied. Permanent safe search preferred setting does not exist for guest sessions. The only workaround (and painful method) is to log in with your own account even before you search.
